HostGator – excellent hosting on a monthly basis is ideal for newbies.
I recommend HostGator for newbies because it is the least expensive way to get your feet wet in putting a website on the internet. I use HostGator myself for EdRykiel.com and other Addon Domain and Subdomain websites [If you don't know what I am talking about with Addon Domains and Subdomains, let me know and I'll fill you in on that.]. eMarketWorks.com is actually hosted as an Addon domain at HostGator.
HostGator allows me to have unlimited domains using the Addon process for just the price of one domain, for me that is about $10/month. If you can beat that and the quality support I have gotten with HostGator, please let me know!
