The basic idea is that search engines are dumb like computers so software engineeers like those at Yahoo and Google try to figure out what the content of a web page is without actually reading it. What? You thought actual humans were reading all the bazillion web pages on the internet?
Is It Important?
The software "crawls" your web page for clues as to what’s on it. Why is that important? Because the search engines use that information to rank your web page and only the highest ranked pages show up on page 1 when someone does a search.

SEO tries to "optimize" the information on your web page so search engines will like what they find, and hopefully give it a high rank, and therefore, a page 1 display.
